Benoa Harbor, When Russian Superyachts Come to Call

Benoa Harbor, When Russian Superyachts Come to Call

On Wednesday, 29 July 2026, one of the world’s most expensive and sophisticated Superyachts was berthed at Bali’s Port of Benoa. The visit of the 142-meter Super Yacht NORD, valued at US$500 million, represents a major achievement within the context of Indonesia’s ambition to establish Bali’s southernmost port as a leading Bali Maritime Tourism Hub.

NORD is a 142-meter (466 ft) SUPER YACHT built and launched in 2021 by Lürssen, a German shipyard in Bremen-Vegesack, and was constructed at an estimated cost of US$500 million. Arguably one of the most luxurious Superyachts sailing today, the Superyacht accommodates 36 passengers in 20 luxurious suites. NORD boasts 2 helipads, a swimming pool, a beauty salon, a beach club, underwater lights, a gymnasium, a movie theatre, and a boat tender garage.

Several Superyacht tracking websites show that the NORD has been berthed in the Port of Benoa, since at least early July. No information is available on when the yacht will resume its voyage or its next port of call.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Oligarch Alexei Mordashov

Owned by Russian multi-billionaire Alexei Mordashov (Alexey Alexandrovich Mordashov), who Forbes Magazine estimates to have a net worth of US$37 billion, Superyacht NORD has been largely “on the run” since 2022, evading seizure since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Mordashov is viewed as someone with a close association with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is the chairman of Severstal – a Russian conglomerate with holdings in metal, energy, and mining firms and a co-owner of Rossiya Bank. Rossiya Bank is listed by the European Union (EU) as the “personal bank” of senior officials who benefited from the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The Panama Papers reported that a company associated with Mordashov paid for several of Vladimir Putin’s pet projects and “gave generously” to close associates of the Russian President.

In 2007, Mordashov purchased an interest in TUI Travel and the TUI Group and, since 2016, has occupied a seat on the TUI Group Supervisory Board.

On 28 February 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU blacklisted Mordashov and ordered all his assets to be frozen. In March 2022, the LADY M., another luxury yacht owned by the Russian billionaire, was seized by Italian police. In early March 2022, the Superyacht NORD escaped seizure because it was berthed in the Seychelles and outside the legal jurisdiction of the EU.

In 2022, Mordashov was also sanctioned by the UK government in 2022 in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As the unpopular Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, it is assumed that the luxurious NORD Superyacht must selectively seek safe havens and ports of call where international seizure orders can’t or won’t be executed.
