Domestic Tourist Extending Their Bali Stay Due to Krakatau Eruption. Bali International Flights Deemed Safe.
RadarBali reports that the unprecedented eruptions of four volcanoes in Indonesia are causing flight cancellations across various provinces, creating ripple effects on operations at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport. To date, eruptive volcanic activity from Mount Anak Krakatau has had its most significant impact on flight operations on Sunday. 06 September 2026.
Speaking after a plenary session of the DPRD-Bali on Monday, 07 September 2026, Bali Governor Wayan Koster acknowledged that only domestic flights to and from Bali were affected by the volcano.
Meanwhile, international flights reportedly faced no disruptions, except for those transiting Singapore or Jakarta on the way to Bali.
”Flights to Soekarno-Hatta and other regions connected to it—including those for our passengers who intended to return to Jakarta yesterday but could not—have been affected. Angkasa Pura has handled this matter, and ticket refunds have been issued,” Koster said.
Amid the current condition, which remains difficult to predict, Koster noted that passengers understand the situation, leading some domestic tourists to extend their stay in Bali.
”However, regarding international flights returning to Bali, there were absolutely no disruptions,” Koster said.
Koster hopes the Anak Krakatau eruption will end soon so that flight operations—particularly those between Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Banten and Bali—can return to normal. “Hopefully, the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau will end soon so that flights from Soekarno-Hatta to Bali and other regions can resume normal operations,” the Governor explained.
Regarding the impact of the volcano’s eruption on Bali tourism, officials acknowledged an increase in foreign tourist arrivals. International routes remain unaffected; in fact, international arrivals have increased slightly year on year.
The volcanic eruption is felt most in domestic arrivals, which typically see between 12,000 and 16,000 visitors arriving each day. “Yes, there has been a significant decline. Under normal circumstances, domestic flights to Ngurah Rai handle around 12,000 to 16,000 passengers daily. That flow has been disrupted. That is essentially the situation,” Koster explained.
The Head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, I Wayan Sumarajaya, confirmed the ongoing decline in domestic tourist arrivals at Bali’s airport. Adding: “This is because the most frequently traveled route—to and from Soekarno-Hatta Airport—is currently closed,” said Sumarajaya.
“Overall, there is an impact, though we hope it won’t be severe,” he added.
Seven volcanoes are currently erupting across Indonesia: Mount Ibu (North Maluku), Semeru (East Java), Lewotobi Laki-laki (Southeastern Flores), Ili Lewotolok (Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara), Anak Krakatau (South Sumatra), and Sinabung (North Sumatra).
