The State News Agency ANTARA reports that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has stated that the budget allocation for disaster mitigation must be significantly increased as a proactive measure to address potential future disasters in Indonesia.
”We must be prepared to face situations like this at any time. It is also a lesson for us—for the government I lead—that we must significantly increase the budget allocation for disaster mitigation,” said Prabowo while opening a limited meeting on natural disaster management in Indonesia via video conference at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
According to the President, Indonesia’s location within the “Ring of Fire” region entails a high risk of various disasters, necessitating enhanced government preparedness before any such event occurs.
Prabowo has instructed State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi to coordinate with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa and the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Rachmat Pambudy, to formulate a disaster mitigation plan based on the principle of providing resources that exceed minimum requirements.
”More helicopters are better, more water pumps are better, more firefighting equipment is better. That way, we are ready before an incident occurs,” he said.
The Head of State also requested that more small-sized excavators be made available at the village level, particularly in areas that frequently experience forest fires.
Prabowo instructed the drafting of a comprehensive, large-scale disaster mitigation master plan, including strengthening the supporting infrastructure for handling forest and land fires.
