NusaBali reports that Thomas Sugiarto Oentoro was appointed President Director of PT Garuda Indonesia during an Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (EGMS) held on Thursday, 08 October 2026. Thomas succeeds Glenny H. Kairupan—who now serves the National Flag Carrier as President Commissioner—as Garuda continues its efforts to restore performance and strengthen the Airline’s financial position.
Thomas previously served as Garuda Indonesia’s Deputy President Director starting in October 2025. He also served as an Independent Commissioner for Garuda from 2023 to 2024. This leadership change is part of the company’s ongoing transformation, particularly regarding fleet recovery, revenue growth, and business sustainability.
Before joining Garuda’s Board of Directors, Thomas served as Chief Risk Officer at the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) from 2024 to 2025. His career also includes roles as Vice President of the Mezzanine Capital Unit at OCBC and Managing Director at KV Asia Capital. He studied finance at the NYU Stern School of Business and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Under the new leadership structure, Alan McIntyre fills the Commercial Director role, bringing experience from the Qantas Group and Jetstar. Eric Ferdinand Sofyal was appointed Operations Director, having previously served as Operations Director at Citilink and held various operational roles at Garuda. Meanwhile, Dina Sandri Fani fills the position of Human Capital & Corporate Service Director. Balagopal Kunduvara remains Finance and Risk Management Director, Mukhtaris remains Technical Director, and Neil Raymond Mills remains Transformation Director.

Rivqy Abdul Halim, a member of Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), said the change in Garuda’s President Director should serve as momentum for a comprehensive management overhaul. “The change of the President Director must be followed by tangible management improvements,” said Rivqy. Rivqy reminded the new president director that Garuda requires professional governance, measurable efficiency, and improved service quality. “We must ensure that the change in leadership does not merely result in a structural shift without impacting the company’s performance,” he cautioned.
The Garuda Indonesia Group recorded revenue of US1.80billioninthefirsthalfof2026,a16percentincreasecomparedtothesameperiodthepreviousyear.Netlossnarrowedby23.2percenttoUS113 million, while earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose by 12.7 percent to US$74 million. These improvements occurred despite a 43.6 percent increase in aviation fuel costs.
Operationally, the Garuda Indonesia Group fleet totals 104 aircraft at the end of June 2026. Aircraft availability is crucial to strengthening Garuda and Citilink’s flight networks and increasing service frequency. However, fleet recovery must be matched with effective management of costs, liquidity, and productivity to ensure capacity growth translates into revenue and improved cash flow.
