Chez Gado Gado: Iconic Bali Beachside Restaurant Destroyed by Fire

A catastrophic fire on the evening of Sunday, 30 August 2026, razed Chez Gado Gado Restaurant – one of Bali’s most iconic beachside dining venues in Seminyak. The building was completely gutted by the fire, which took nearly three hours to extinguish, causing estimated damage of around Rp 4 billion.

Located directly on Seminyak Beach, at Jalan Camplung Tanduk No, 99, the restaurant has been a favorite of Bali visitors and residents since it first opened more than 30 years ago. The restaurant was owned by the Balinese family-owned “Double Six Group” (PT Bali 66 Citra Persada).

The fire originated on the north side of the restaurant, near Gado-Gado’s entrance, at 7:40 pm and quickly spread, intensifying in ferocity, aided by highly flammable traditional alang-alang thatched roofing.

As quoted by NusaBali, Ketut Gatep, a 37-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, said he was stationed on the west side of the location when the incident occurred. He saw flames erupting from the corner of the restaurant’s northern front section. Security personnel attempted to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers; however, the blaze rapidly intensified after spreading to the thatched roof.

According to Gatep, the rapidly growing blaze caused employees and patrons to scramble outside to safety. Nearby residents and business owners also panicked and rushed to secure their belongings. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

I Kadek Budana, a Platoon Commander with the Badung Fire and Rescue Agency (Diskarmat), stated that upon receiving the fire report, the agency deployed 10 fire trucks to combat the blaze. The deployment involved fire brigade and equipment from the Main Fire Station as well as the Kunti, Majapahit, Dalung, and Mengwi stations. Police, security personnel, and residents also assisted in the firefighting efforts at the scene.

”Personnel battled the blaze for approximately two hours and 40 minutes. During the operation, around 115,000 liters (115 metric tons) of water were used to extinguish the fire,” Budana explained. The building, measuring some 45 by 40 meters, was completely consumed by the fire. An office building situated on the southern side of the structure was successfully saved.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Some guests, however, have provided eyewitness accounts of helium-filled balloons used as party decorations catching fire and exploding, causing a blaze that quickly spread.
