BeritaBali <\/em>reports that a group of activists and consumers staged a peaceful protest in front of Plataran Ubud Resort in Bali on Monday, 10 August 2026. The demonstration aimed to urge Plataran to commit to using cage-free eggs within its supply chain to achieve a more humane treatment of egg-laying hens.<\/p>\n

\u200bThe protest involved 10 activists riding 10 motorcycles to deliver a petition to Plataran. <\/em>The message advocating the use of cage-free eggs will continue to be voiced through a month-long tour around Bali, specifically targeted for the vicinity of Plataran properties.<\/p>\n

\"Activists<\/p>\n

\u200bThis activity is an effort to raise awareness of the welfare of egg-laying hens within the hospitality industry’s supply chain.<\/p>\n

\u200bPlataran<\/em> is a large-scale hospitality company managing hotels, resorts, event venues, restaurants, real estate, private yachts, and national park operations across 81 locations in Indonesia and Japan.<\/p>\n

\u200bAs a major business group, activists believe Plataran<\/em> needs to address animal welfare aspects within its supply chain. Plataran\u2019s<\/em> image as an eco-friendly brand should, they argue, be matched by a commitment to animal welfare.<\/p>\n

\u200bActivists noted that Indonesia’s egg industry remains dominated by confined cage systems. Under these conventional farming methods, laying hens are confined throughout a production cycle lasting approximately 63 weeks.<\/p>\n

\u200bCramped cage conditions are considered to restrict the hens from engaging in natural behaviors such as wing-stretching, nesting, dust-bathing, perching, and socializing.<\/p>\n

\"Activists<\/p>\n

\u200bA 2019 report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), <\/em>cited during the protest, concluded that confined cage systems have a higher prevalence of *Salmonella* compared to cage-free systems. Meanwhile, research by Universitas Gadjah Mada<\/em> has detected antibiotic-resistant *Salmonella*<\/em> in supermarket eggs sourced from caged-hen systems.<\/p>\n

\u200bThe discovery of these multidrug-resistant strains serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible antibiotic use and the implementation of robust food safety regulations within the industry.<\/p>\n

\u200b”We have been in contact with Plataran<\/em> since 2024. We hope that the meetings held with Plataran stakeholders at their headquarters, combined with various advocacy efforts in Jakarta, will lead to a positive decision. However, to date, there has been no progress regarding their cage-free egg policy,” said Elfha Shavira, Campaign Lead for Act for Farmed Animals.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u200bElfha stated that her team believes Plataran<\/em> is capable of taking concrete steps toward using cage-free eggs.<\/p>\n

\u200b”We are confident that Plataran can take concrete action regarding the use of cage-free eggs. However, despite opening lines of communication and engaging in extensive dialogue since 2024, we have yet to see clarity or tangible steps to ensure that chicken welfare is integrated into their supply chain standards,” said Elfha Shavira, Campaign Lead for Act for Farmed Animals.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u200bShe noted that such a commitment is particularly important given that Plataran<\/em> is a business group operating in Indonesia and Japan and serving international markets.<\/p>\n

\"Activists<\/p>\n

\u200b”As a business group operating in Indonesia and Japan and serving international markets, Plataran ought to address this ethical aspect. The global shift toward cage-free eggs is inevitable, and 110 companies in Indonesia have already made commitments. Plataran promotes an eco-friendly, sustainable image that should encompass animal welfare and public health. It is time for Plataran to align its practices by announcing a cage-free commitment,” Elfha added.<\/p>\n

\u200bA study by the Center for Animal Welfare and Ethics at the University of Queensland’s School of Veterinary Science<\/em>\u2014cited in the campaign materials\u2014indicates that prioritizing animal welfare encourages the public to pay greater attention to animal health and care. The study also identifies farming systems as a factor influencing consumer preferences regarding eggs, second only to price.<\/p>\n

\u200bThrough this peaceful protest, activists hope that Plataran<\/em> will promptly take concrete steps to prioritize animal welfare and adopt business practices that are more ethical, responsible, and sustainable.<\/p>\n
