Indonesian Rupiah Weakens to Rp18,087 per US Dollar; ASITA Bali Underlines Impact on Bali Tourism<\/p>\n

BALINEWS<\/em> reports that the rupiah exchange rate continues to weaken against the US dollar. During foreign exchange trading on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, the rupiah weakened to a new record level of Rp18,087.99 per one US dollar.<\/p>\n

The depreciation of the rupiah occurred amidst a background of rising global oil prices, increasing US bond yields, growing concerns regarding global inflation, and a surge in foreign currency demand from importers approaching the end of the third quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n

This exchange rate movement has drawn the attention of Bali’s tourism sector, where the exchange rate of the Indonesian currency against the US Dollar is intricately linked to a whole range of economic activities driven by foreign tourists and foreign currency transactions.<\/p>\n

For foreign tourists carrying or using US dollars, the rupiah’s weakening automatically means that the value of dollars exchanged into rupiah increases. This situation also impacts tourism business operators who sell products or tour packages in foreign currencies.<\/p>\n

The Chairman of ASITA Bali (Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies), I Putu Winastra, stated that the strengthening of the US dollar needs to be viewed from two perspectives: both the positive and negative impacts on Bali\u2019s tourism industry.<\/p>\n

“On the positive side, the rise of the US dollar\u2014surpassing approximately Rp18,087.99 per USD on 30 September 2026, with a selling rate reaching Rp17,908.01 based on Bank Indonesia’s transaction rates\u2014is an exchange rate that certainly benefits tourism products sold overseas in US dollars, as the exchange rate is higher,” said Winastra.<\/p>\n

According to him, when Indonesian tourism products are offered in rupiah denominations to foreign tourists, the weakening of the rupiah also makes the prices of these products appear cheaper when converted into US dollars. “When we sell in rupiah, our products appear cheaper than before. However, this does not mean our products are of low quality,” he said.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Winastra cautioned that a rise in the US dollar’s value does not automatically translate into higher profits for tourism businesses. This is because a weakening rupiah can also lead to increased operational costs and higher prices for the raw materials used to provide tourism products.<\/p>\n

“The rise in the US dollar does not correlate directly with increased profits. It can also drive up operational and raw material costs associated with the products themselves,” he explained.<\/p>\n

Consequently, according to Winastra, any gains from the exchange rate shift could be eroded and offset by rising production and operational costs.<\/p>\n

“If you crunch the numbers, the increase in costs\u2014both production and operational\u2014might well match the rise in the US dollar, effectively balancing things out,” he said.<\/p>\n

Therefore, ASITA Bali<\/em> hopes for exchange rate stability so that tourism businesses can operate with greater confidence and certainty when setting prices and managing operational costs.<\/p>\n

“We hope for currency stability so that tourism business operators can feel at ease,” Winastra said.<\/p>\n

In addition to exchange rate stability, ASITA Bali<\/em> also hopes for policies that support the promotion of Indonesian tourism products in international markets.<\/p>\n

Winastra believes tourism businesses need the flexibility to promote their products abroad using foreign currencies\u2014such as the US dollar or the euro\u2014while ensuring that final transactions are still settled in rupiah.<\/p>\n

“We hope for a policy allowing tourism operators to promote products overseas in foreign currencies like the US dollar or euro, while ensuring the actual transactions are ultimately settled in rupiah,” he said.<\/p>\n

He believes such an approach will provide certainty for business operators and reduce hesitation regarding the promotion of Indonesian tourism products in international markets.<\/p>\n
