Wayan’s conservation work for Bali’s vanishing firefly population was recently covered in The New York Times and National Geographic Magazine, both of which highlighted efforts to return fireflies to Taro’s natural environment.

Recalling his childhood in Taro, Wayan Wardika often saw large numbers of fireflies each evening. After working in tourism away from his home village, Wayan returned to his ancestral home and found that environmental conditions had changed markedly. The widespread use of pesticides, pollution, and shrinking natural habitats have combined to reduce the presence of fireflies. Unable to accept this situation, Wayan launched the “Bring Back The Light” program to help restore the firefly population in Taro.
