NusaBali<\/em> reports that sightings of King Cobras in the residential areas of Tabanan Regency, West Bali, are becoming increasingly frequent. Over the past three months, the Asih Tabanan Reptile Foundation<\/em> has removed at least 18 snakes identified as King Cobras, with the longest snake measuring 4.7 meters. These wild snakes have been found in various locations in the Tabanan area, including private yards, entryways, and even bedrooms, where they have been found hiding beneath beds.<\/p>\n

\u200bNi Putu Astridayanti, chairperson of the Asih Tabanan Reptile Foundation,<\/em> told the press that King Cobra sightings typically increase between September and December. During this period each year, King Cobras are more active in searching for nesting sites and suitable mates. The sightings continue until January, particularly when eggs begin to hatch.<\/p>\n

\u200bAstridayanti said on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, that the final quarter of the year, stretching until January, is a period of increased mobility when the large, venomous snakes search for mates and suitable nesting areas. Newborn cobras typically hatch in January,<\/p>\n

\u200bAstridayanti explained that the King Cobra mating season generally runs from July to September. The snakes’ heightened activity during this period leads to wider movement, increasing the likelihood of encountering them in residential areas.<\/p>\n

\u200bContinuing, Astridayanti explained that king cobras appearing in homes is not necessarily linked to the presence of food. King Cobras are apex predators<\/em> that hunt other reptiles, including other snakes. As a result, the snakes may enter residential areas while pursuing prey. “So far, most captures have taken place in residential areas. Some have been found in bedrooms, under beds, at the front of the house, and in the yard,” she explained.<\/p>\n

\u200bKing Cobra sightings have been reported across several districts in Tabanan, including Tabanan, Marga, Penebel, Baturiti, Kerambitan, East Selemadeg, and West Selemadeg. One particularly time-consuming rescue took place in Banjar Sekartaji, Sesandan Village, where a King Cobra was found inside a drainage culvert in front of the home of Tabanan Regional Secretary I Gede Susila.<\/p>\n

\u200bThat extraction proved challenging because the snake was positioned within a narrow opening. A team from the Tabanan Asih Reptile Foundation<\/em> eventually asked local firefighters for help removing the snake from the culvert. However, the effort hit a snag when the snake’s body became wedged in a narrow opening. After a struggle lasting about five and a half hours, they finally extracted and secured the snake. They then took the King Cobra away for further care and safe relocation.<\/p>\n

\u200bAstridayanti noted that the Foundation rescued the King Cobras in varying conditions. Of the 18 snakes discovered so far, some were mature females ready to lay eggs, while others were found injured. The Foundation took all rescued King Cobras to its headquarters in Tabanan Asih for treatment and conservation.<\/p>\n

\u200bAstridayanti urged residents not to panic if they encounter a King Cobra. Residents were also advised not to try to catch, chase, or drive the snake away, as such actions could make the snake feel threatened and launch a defensive attack. “If you see a cobra, do not panic and do not disturb it. Report it to us immediately so it can be safely removed,” she emphasized.<\/p>\n

\u200bCobras in Bali<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two types of Cobras are found on the Island of Bali: the Javan Spitting Cobra (Naja sputatrix<\/em>) and the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah)<\/p>\n

\u200bBefitting its name, Javan Spitting Cobras<\/em> can \u201cspit\u201d<\/em> or \u201cspray<\/em>\u201d venom up to two meters, with an uncanny ability to aim at the eyes of animals or humans they perceive as a threat. Venom that contacts the eye can cause temporary or permanent blindness. Smaller than its counterpart, the King Cobra, the Javan Spitting Cobra is remarkably shy and tends to flee rather than fight. When cornered or provoked, the Javan variant raises its fore-body and spreads its hood. This snake is often seen in rice fields or nearby human settlements where it preys on rodents, frogs, and other snakes.<\/p>\n

\u200bKing Cobras, known to Indonesians as the Ular Raja Cobra<\/em>, hold the distinction of being the world\u2019s longest venomous snake, often growing to four to 5.5 meters. The King Cobra is a formidable and potentially highly dangerous snake that can menacingly raise its decorative hood, characterized by a chevron pattern or \u201ceye shape,\u201d  all magnificently displayed when the King Cobra hisses and raises its head more than one meter off the ground. When it strikes, this snake can deliver a high volume of neurotoxic venom. Like most snakes, the King Cobra is elusive and avoids human contact, but it can be found in forested regions, dense vegetation, and rural agricultural areas, such as West Bali.<\/p>\n

\u200bAttacks on humans are rare. King Cobra bites usually result from provocation, failing to keep a careful distance, or imprudent behavior by an exhibitionist snake charmer playing to a nearby crowd or video camera.<\/p>\n

\u200bThose who survive a King Cobra bite usually do so after repeated doses of hard-to-find antivenom. First-hand accounts of survivors testify to the severe pain, paralysis, and respiratory distress that are all life-threatening manifestations of cobra envenomation.<\/p>\n

\u200bCobras are found across a wide area of Bali; the reason for the higher-than-average population concentration in the Tabanan Area of West Bali is the subject of much conjecture and speculation. One theory holds that certain areas of Tabanan have long been favored for releasing rescued cobras back into nature, which may have inadvertently led to a high concentration of snakes in surrounding forest areas.<\/p>\n

\u200bThe King Cobra is diurnal, meaning it is active during the day, while many other snake species found in Bali are nocturnal.<\/p>\n
